An Associate Editor – Copy Editing for a book or journal is responsible for ensuring that the content being published is high on readability and comprehension, has no language errors, is totally aligned as per the Thieme style guide, and is consistent in the usage and presentation of all linguistic and stylistic elements.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Edit journal articles, book chapters, and other types of content in accordance with the understanding of the Thieme copyediting style guide and the different levels of copyediting that have been defined.
- Correct faulty grammar, syntax, punctuation, and other aspect of language usage.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in spellings, punctuation, capitalization, hyphenation, italicization, abbreviations, quotes, list formats, and other elements of a journal article, book chapter, or other types of content.
- Ensure the use of appropriate and inclusive language.
- Flag any text that is overly complicated, confusing, or does not make sense and provide suggestions for revision.
- Ask for clarification of terms/abbreviations likely to be new to readers.
- Rewrite text that is wordy, overly complicated, or confusing, and raise a query to the author to check the change.
- Rework transitions, moving sentences, and reorganizing sentence structure to improve readability.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in the style of footnotes, bibliographies, reference lists, tables, figures, and in-text citations.
- Check references for correctness.
- Check cross-references.
- Raise queries for any apparent gaps in information, inconsistencies or inaccuracies.
- Introduce consistent style and tone in multi-author manuscripts.
- Suggest changes to article/book chapter title, text and headings, and other changes in the narrative’s structure to improve readability and comprehension.
- Ensure that abstracts, summaries, end-of-chapter questions, and other elements at the beginning and end of articles/chapters etc., are in line with the content.
- Draw up a list of abbreviations, list of tables, figures, and videos, if necessary.
- Check the structure of tables and amend, if necessary.
Required Background & skills:
Qualifications
Post-graduate. Preference will be for individuals from an educational background in the sciences, especially life sciences. However, experienced copyeditors with a background in medical/science editing, irrespective of their educational background, would be preferred equally.
Eligibility
Excellent English language skills.
Experience in copyediting higher academic content, familiarity with style guides (familiarity with AMA would be highly desirable), and working on references, citations, and other elements of scholarly journals and books.
